BMW will outfit its cars with a more intelligent traction control system, capable of responding faster than traditional setups.
The system was first fitted to the i3s, and responds 50 times faster than conventional traction management systems.
How? Rather than working out what it needs to do in a remote unit, the setup makes its calculations from within the powertrain.
Although it was initially developed for electric vehicles, which place more strain on traction management systems with their instant low-down torque, BMW says it also works in front-, rear- and all-wheel drive cars powered by internal combustion engines.
“With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than conventional power units,” Peter Langen, BMW head of chassis development, said.
