According to the Australian media, prototype RX-9 will debut on the car Biennial in Tokyo next year, while the premiere of the production version is going to happen at the same car fair, but in 2019. The launch on the market in 2020 will coincide with the celebration of the centenary of the company.
Hopes that successor to the RX-7 and RX-8 will appear are increased when it appeared the concept RX Vision in Tokyo last year. Since then, Mazda has not revealed his cards, but succeed to protect the name RX-9 and approved the design, engineering and the manufacturing.
Expectations are that the styling of the serial RX-9 will be less radical in terms of concept RX Vision, but will share the basic proportions such as long hood and short “tail” with a slightly smaller total length. Viewed from the side, the vehicle will remind more of designer corporate solution that features a portfolio of Mazda, with a higher bonnet line, to comply with the rules for pedestrian protection. Of course, the silhouette will keep a low and elegant profile.
The new generation SKYACTIV-R of the rotary engine will be the solution from the concept, which means that it is a 1.6-liter engine with two rotors (800 ccm each) and turbo charger. The engine will deliver 400 horsepower, which is exceptional value, having in mind that the car has a mass less than 1,300kg.
