German brand presented Spyder R8 supercar performance of the current car fair in New York.
The model replaced the hard fixed roof with soft fabric roof which can be opened at speeds up to 50 km / h. Audi engineers have decided on a canvas roof in order to maintain the agility to not add extra weight to the Spyder’s performance compared to the standard model.
Compared with the previous model, increased rigidity of the body for more than 50%. The new R8 Spyder weighs 1612 kg – which include reinforcements in specific areas of the body – the threshold, the A-pillars and windscreen frame. These reinforcements are now lighter by 10 percent, resulting in a very significant saving of 113 kg compared to its predecessor.
At the heart of the supercar lies the same 5.2-liter V10 engine with 540 hp, thanks to which R8 V10 Spyder is able to achieve acceleration from 0-100 km / h in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 318 km / h. Here is the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that delivers power to all four wheels.
Losing the roof means that now the sound of the V10 orchestra will travel more easily to the cabin, making the whole driving experience even more emotional.
