Motor Show in Geneva by default starts with solemn proclamation of the car of the year as chosen by leading European automotive journalists.
A jury of 58 prominent automotive journalists from 22 European countries, awarded the new Astra with 309 points. At the second and third place in the final vote were Volvo XC90 with 294 and Mazda MX-5 with 202 points.
Trophy “Car of the Year 2016 ‘at the head of Opel, Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, was handed over by the President of COTY, Hakan Matson, last night ahead of the first of two nivinar days of the 86 th International Motor Show in Geneva.
“The new Astra is the beginning of a new era in Opel, and victory in this year’s choice for car of the year shows that we are on right track,” said Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. “We are honored to receive this prestigious award from leading automotive journalists.”
The “Car of the Year” was established in 1964. This year’s victory is the fifth in the portfolio of Opel when it comes to this prestigious recognition. Opel Kadett E is the first car from Rüsselsheim who managed to win, in 1985. Two years later, Omega A earned him this prestigious European award. In the recent era, Opel twice the top spot on the podium, first with the Insignia in 2009 and then in the Ampera in 2012.
For this award “Car of 2016” participated all competing models that have emerged in the European market in 2015, a requirement to participate was to have sold at least 5,000 copies
This year again Astra emerged as the winner among the seven finalists chosen from more than 40 new models of cars of all categories – from sport roadsters to premium saloons and SUV vehicles. The new Astra is already winner of several international awards as SafetyBest 2015 and the Golden Steering Wheel and won the maximum five-star EuroNCAP test.
